What Is Resveratrol?
It's really a dynamic duo of nature and science teaming up at work together. Science is constantly finding within nature cures, antidotes and solutions to the problems that many humans deal with in everyday life. It can be difficult to keep up with all the discoveries and new medicines and supplements that can contribute to a healthier, more fulfilling lifestyle. One fairly recent discovery that most people have heard about, or are likely to hear about soon is resveratrol.
Resveratrol is an agent compound found in plants, commonly in the skins of grapes, blueberries, mulberries, raspberries, wine and peanuts. One of its benefits is that it has strong anti-oxidant properties, which are helpful in reducing ageing. However, there are many other benefits of consuming this compound.
There are numerous benefits of resveratrol which includes anti-aging properties (reducing wrinkles as well as enhancing skin), helps lower blood sugar, lowers cholesterol and helps prevent cancer. It also has been said to reduce memory loss and increase tolerance to exercise. With all the benefits, there seem to be few, if any, reasons not to be getting resveratrol in your diet.
Because of the scientific studies conducted, most of which have been studied on mice and insects, and their positive contributions, a supplement has been manufactured to make the compound more easily and conveniently accessible. Of course getting resveratrol from its natural sources and taking it in that way is always a good idea, especially considering that it is found in foods that are healthy anyway, but you cannot always get the right amount and concentration if you get it from foods.
Ironically, wine does contain the compound resveratrol, and is one of the early food discovered to have it, but the way it is absorbed into the body may not be the most effective. It seems that the compound taken from natural sources often makes its way through the body without being absorbed properly. This is not the case with supplements, most of which contain the compound derived from Japanese knotweed.
Medically, there are some worries that resveratrol acts as an estrogen in the body and therefore may contribute to the development of breast cancer. This has yet to be proven, though. Also, for the same reason and also because of a lack of research, pregnant women, children and anyone under the age of eighteen should not take the supplement, as it is unknown what type of affect it might have on an undeveloped body.
Conclusively, however, resveratrol is so far considered to be very safe. The positive effects have not been strongly proven, and the supplement is still in its early stages before it is launched officially as a safe and proven product, but with television coverage such as on the Oprah Winfrey Show, you can be sure that more and more people will be trying it. And the more that do, the more positive reviews are likely to come out and the more mainstream and commonplace the supplement will become.
