How To Find The Right Resveratrol Content In Your Grapes And Wine

Resveratrol content is found in red wine to varying degrees, and it is also found in certain varieties of dark skinned grape. The benefits of resveratrol have been hotly disputed, but recent evidence is beginning to show more and more that several health conditions are aided by the extract. It is probably regrettable that so much of the media interest has focused on being able to retard the aging process. Although this remains a significant possibility, there are other health benefits to be had from resveratrol, which probably deserve more attention.

All of the early tests carried out on resveratrol were carried out on laboratory animals. Obviously, there is a limit to how much we can derive from such experiments. These experiments were, again, a function of the obsession with the aging process. Animals were used which had extremely short lifespans. Recent tests have been carried out on human volunteers, which show far greater possibilities for resveratrol. It is strongly suggested that this supplement may be effective in reducing cholesterol, and therefore benefiting heart conditions, and also against cancer.

If you are going to try resveratrol, for whatever reason, you will need to make sure that you select the right product. Although red wine and grapes have been touted as great sources all of resveratrol, not all types are equal. If you are choosing to use grapes as your source of resveratrol, you need to stay away from the standard green varieties of grapes. These have hardly any resveratrol. What you need to do is select either the dark purple, or the dark red, varieties of grapes. The skins of these grapes have a rich resveratrol content.

When it comes to choosing red wine, the case is far less clear. It is only now that serious research is being carried out to try to determine which brand of red wine has the highest concentration of resveratrol content. Until this evidence comes through, it is probably better to vary your consumption from day to day. This way, although you may well spend some days drinking wine with a very low resveratrol content, this should be made up by the days in which you consume a very high content.

The only way to guarantee concentrated resveratrol content is, of course, to use a supplement. This will involve you in considerably more expense than simply using grapes or wine. If you are fundamentally healthy, and look upon resveratrol as a kind of preventative, you will probably find this expense to be too great. If, however, you already have a pre-existing heart condition, it is probably a good idea to take a supplement as well as getting an intake of resveratrol from natural sources. Especially in the case of wine, we simply do not yet know enough about its resveratrol content.
